I think I saw Josh McDaniel in my scrambled eggs
If you follow the Griz and the Denver Broncos, you may know where this is going. McDaniel is the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams and he spent Thursday trying out running backs for an open roster spot because the Rams could be missing Steven Jackson (sore quad) Monday night against the Giants.
One of those running backs was not Chase Reynolds, who was cut from the practice squad.
I wouldn’t think of McDaniel if Reynolds and safety Jonathan Nelson weren’t released to add center Tim Barnes and QB Tom Brandstater, a 2009 sixth-round draft pick of the Broncos (as noted by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch). McDaniel had a memorably disasterous stint as the Broncos’ head coach in 2009-10.
Perhaps this is neither here nor there. The NFL is a tough business, especially for a free agent like Reynolds. If you’re not drafted, and Reynolds wasn’t despite 4,067 rushing yards and 59 career touchdowns for the Montana Grizzlies, it’s that much tougher to make a team. Conversely if you get drafted it’s pretty hard NOT to make the team — though Nelson was in fact a 7th-round draft pick of the Rams in April.
